Langtang
Overview
Nestled between the main Himalayan range to the north and a relatively lower range of snowy peaks to the south, Langtang Valley is a very famous trekking destination in Nepal. Despite being fairly close to Kathmandu, modernization has not significantly influenced the valley and its inhabitants. This adventure offers a perfect combination of astonishing Himalayan views along with the experience of rural culture and traditional local lifestyles. The sight of some of the finest creations of nature in the form of formidable yet serene snowy peaks — Mt. Langtang Lirung (7,200m/23,622ft), Mt. Ganesh Himal (7,600m), Mt. Langtang II (7,227m), Mt. Gang Chhenpo (6,388m), Mt. Naya Kanga Ri (5,846m), and Mt. Dorje Lakpa (6,966m) — makes this trek highly rewarding. Rhododendron and bamboo forests rich in wildlife habitat, majestic waterfalls flowing over mammoth boulders, and soothing natural hot springs are some of the remarkable highlights of this trail. Passing through traditional and ethnic Tamang villages, the route leads to Langtang Valley and then to the welcoming Sherpa settlement near Kyangjin Gompa. On the way to Gosainkunda, you will witness a breathtaking sunrise over the glistening Gosainkunda Lake, a sacred lake for both Hindus and Buddhists. Laurebinayak Pass (4,609m) also offers beautiful rice terraces, splendid monasteries, and delightful villages such as Tarke Gyang and Sermathang. Langtang Valley is protected by Langtang National Park, the second largest national park in Nepal. Walking through the park is part of the itinerary. Although spotting wildlife in dense forest can be challenging, you may encounter monkeys, musk deer, pika, and the colorful Danphe (the national bird of Nepal). With its narrow valley rich in flora and fauna, Langtang Valley trekking provides a unique and unforgettable experience. After reaching Langtang Village, the Langtang Circuit trekking trail continues to Kyangjin Gompa (3,740m), home to the famous Yala Cheese Factory. From Kyangjin Gompa, a hike to the pastures of Langsisa (4,084m) offers magnificent views of numerous glaciers. Langsisa has a few huts and can be reached within a day's walk from Kyangjin Gompa. The Langtang Gosaikunda Trek is another popular route in the Langtang region. Magnificent panoramic views and impressive landscapes, with more than 1,000 plant species and over 150 bird species along with various mammals, make this trek even more attractive. Hiking to Tserko Ri (5,000m) for tremendous views of the Langtang Lirung (7,200m) range is truly an unforgettable experience.
